Boxing our Grandparents
“Since the day I was born, my grandma wrote a letter every month or two, to me and then included my sister who was born two years later. Her letters share a story of her life and things she wants us to know that are important to her. She told us those letters are a secret between her and us and no one can read them, not even my parents. That made it even more special, like a game. She gave me the first twelve years of letters when I was ready for it; it took me forever to read them! I never showed them to my parents… as I feel loyal to the rules of the game my grandma established. I have stories about her growing up, stories about other relatives, stories about my mom as a child and about things happening in the world at the time. Those letters are the first thing to go in my box without a doubt.”
